As a part of the Live Music Now Scotland Concert Series staged in the grand gallery of the National Museum of Scotland, Artists Ainsley Hamill and Alastair Paterson rendered an impressive recital-like concert to a large and captive audience in the gallery of the National Museum of Scotland with art songs that reflected on several aspects of Scottish heritage with a finely crafted program of Gaelic tunes, jigs with songs about the pain of war, love, and Scottish culture. It was the most significant museum audience I’ve witnessed this season.

Hamill has tremendous stage presence, a definitively trained voice, and a mature command of her repertoire. Paterson accompaniment was steady and enthusiastic as he negotiated between the electric piano and harmonium. Their works included topics ranging from the Jacobite war, a song redacted by Robert Burns titled “You Jacobites By Name,” and a bit of Celtic dancing to close the concert. Their obvious talent demonstrates why they were among the artists showcased during this season’s Free Fringe Concert Series – both are members of the band, Barluath. I encouraged them to produce and record a CD as a duo soon. I certainly hope they do so. –Jonathan
