Chief Morales: Milwaukee Police Shoot, Kill Man On City’s South Side

Milwaukee police have shot and killed a 48-year-old man on the city’s south side on Monday.

At a 6:45 p.m. press conference, Milwaukee Police Chief Alfonso Morales said officers were following up on a suspect who fled from them earlier in the day. Officers conducted a traffic stop in the 1900 block of South 10th Street shortly before 5 p.m., and the Milwaukee man got out of the vehicle with a gun, Morales said.

The police chief said two officers fired, and the suspect died on the scene from his injuries. No officers were hurt.

Morales said the suspect was wanted on two warrants for violating probation and domestic violence. He said a firearm was recovered, but wouldn’t say if the suspect fired his weapon.

Before Morales spoke at the press conference, the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed it was notified of a fatality in the shooting at about 5:50 p.m. Monday. The medical examiner’s office is called when a death has been reported.

Morales said one of the officers involved is 44 years old and has spent 20 years in the Milwaukee Police Department. The second officer is 27 years old with six years in the department.

The scene is being investigated with the help of officers from Wauwatosa, West Allis, Greenfield, Oak Creek and Marquette University police departments, Morales said.

The police chief said the investigation was ongoing with more information to follow Tuesday or the incoming days.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports the officer-involved shooting comes on the two-year anniversary of the fatal police shooting of Sylville Smith. His death sparked several nights of violent unrest in parts of Milwaukee’s Sherman Park neighborhood.
