New research from Wisconsin shows that a surprising number of teens have posted negative things on social media about themselves. We learn more about the study and what’s driving young people to be so critical. WPR Director Mike Crane is with us to discuss new programs, the resignation of an NPR editor following allegations of sexual harassment, and he answers your questions. We also talk to an expert about why mental illness is so often blamed for mass shootings after President Trump said “mental health problems,” not guns, were to blame for the mass shooting in Texas Sunday.

  • President Trump Blames Mental Illness In Texas Church Shooting

On Sunday, a mass shooting at a Baptist church in Sutherland Springs, Texas, left 26 people dead. The victims ranged in age from 18 months to 77 years, and 20 people were wounded. Authorities identified the gunman as 26-year-old Devin Patrick Kelley, a white man. This is the deadliest mass shooting in Texas history. President Trump expressed condolences for the victims and their families from Japan, where he’s traveling. He also blamed the shooting on “mental health problems,” not guns. We talk to a policy advisor from the National Alliance on Mental Illness, or NAMI, about why mental illness is often blamed for mass shootings.
