Pope Francis Walks A Human Rights Tightrope In Myanmar
Pope Francis visited Myanmar this week. The southeast Asian country, also known as Burma, is ruled by a repressive military regime, but Nobel peace prize winner Ann San Suu Kyi has a significant public role in the country as well.
The Rohingya minority in Myanmar has been the subject of persecution, and according to Doctors without Borders, over 600,000 have fled to neighboring Bangladesh just since the end of August.
Human rights observers were anxious to see if Pope Francis would specifically refer to the oppressed Rohingya minority during his trip to Myanmar. We find out how he navigated the sensitive diplomatic landscape.
