Police say a U.S. marshal was shot and wounded in Racine on Wednesday morning, and the person who allegedly shot and wounded the federal agent has taken his own life, the U.S. Marshals Service announced Wednesday afternoon.

Officials say a U.S. Marshals Service-led task force was attempting to serve the warrant on the south side of Racine when the individual opened fire and the officer was struck. Local officers were assisting in serving the warrant.

A statement from the federal agency said “members of the task force did not fire, but the subject apparently took his own life.”

Racine police say the federal agent was participating in a “multi-jurisdictional” operation.

The shooting happened in the area of Sovereign Drive and Biscayne Avenue, according to a post on the Racine Police Department’s Facebook page. The outer suburban area is located within a mile of Regency Mall, in a section of Racine bordering the Village of Sturtevant and the Village of Mount Pleasant. When a WPR reporter arrived around 11 a.m., law enforcement and other first responders had 3720 Clairmont St. and other homes in the vicinity blocked off and multiple agencies were responding.

The Marshals Service says the officer sustained nonlife-threatening injuries. The officer is in stable condition, according to a police department update.

Police sent out a message to residents living nearby telling them to remain in their homes and away from the area until the situation is resolved. Neighbors outside the blocked-off area congregated around the Georgetown Square Apartments across the street from the blockade. The Kenosha County Sheriff’s Office tweeted that some county residents received the emergency alert and that “there is no danger to the Kenosha County community.” Kenosha County neighbors Racine County.
