Dane County And Madison Declare March 1 A Day Of Remembrance And Recovery

First responders from across Dane County gathered at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison Monday to honor those who have died from COVID-19.

Rows of firetrucks, ambulances and police squad cars illuminated the night sky for 27 minutes, one minute for every 10 county residents who have died during the pandemic.

Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway said Madison and Dane County declared March 1 a day of remembrance and recovery.

“For those left behind, the pandemic is doubly cruel,” she said. “Many families were not able to be with their loved ones in their final days.”

Dane County Executive Joe Parisi recalled announcing Dane County’s first case COVID-19 in February 2020. Since then, 273 Dane County residents have died from the virus. Statewide, 6,412 people have died.

“Each one of their stories is worthy of respect. And it is out of respect for their lives lived that we are here tonight,” he said.
