With Wisconsin’s many lakes, fishing can be a lifetime activity. Summer is the perfect time for young people to learn about fishing and get involved in the outdoors.
"(The Department of Natural Resources) has some various programs that they run at different lakes and ponds around the state," said Gary Engberg, a professional tournament angler and fishing guide.
Engberg is an advocate for getting young people involved in the outdoors and teaching them how to fish. Some youth fishing programs have been going on for over 20 years, he said.
"Hooked On Fishing - Not On Drugs" is the flagship youth education program of the Future Fishermen Foundation. The program works with trained aquatic education professionals and creates a curriculum for youth to develop angling skills, while having fun.
"The kids will spend a whole day out there learning how to fish. Many, many of them are touching their first fish ever. A lot of times, we try to take a picture of it," Engberg said.
To find organizations or events that get kids involved in fishing, check out the DNR’s website or visit their local bait shops and sporting dealers, Engberg said.
"If you have a sportsmen club or conservation club, I’m sure they’re doing something for the kids," he said.
More information on organizations and events promoting outdoor activities can be found on Engberg’s website or the National Professional Anglers Association website for a listing of local chapters.
