State officials are now taking comments on what people would like to see considered as they develop an environmental impact statement for the largest hog farm ever proposed in Wisconsin.

Iowa-based Reicks View Farms is planning to build a farm for roughly 26,000 hogs in Bayfield County near Lake Superior.

Nancy Larson, state Department of Natural Resources northern water leader, said the public feedback will be used to guide decisions on whether they will issue Reicks a water quality protection permit.

“We will be paying special attention to water quality to issues like Fish Creek and Chequamegon Bay and looking at whether there will be potential impacts to surface waters,” Larson said.

Reicks View Farms is proposing to spread roughly 9 million gallons of manure across 1,400 acres there each year. Larson said state officials will consider the farm’s nutrient management plan as part of the decision on whether to grant a permit.

She said they’ll be accepting comments through the end of September.
