It’s Final: Walker Won’t Attend Fishing Opener

It appears Governor Scott Walker won’t be able to make the Governor’s Fishing Opener on Saturday.

After more than a foot of snow at the airport in Cable, local Chamber of Commerce director James Bolen says nature rules.

“His office is looking at the weather and scheduling and the airport landing and stuff like that, and said it might not work for him to come up this weekend. But he certainly understands the importance of fishing and it implications to our society and to our economy.”

It’s been a tough so-called spring up north. Lakes still have lots of ice and they’ve had four snowstorms since April. Bolen says they’ll need a snowplow to get to the local lakes.

“It will be a bit of an issue. Ironically, getting boats to the landings, we were worried about where we could find open water. Now we want to make sure they can get boats into that open water.”

Bolen says the fishing opener festivities at Lakewoods Resort on Lake Namakagon will continue through the weekend with other state officials making the trek. He says Walker’s staff promises he’ll be up sometime this year.
