The University of Wisconsin System Board of Regents unanimously approved Gibson's appointment on Tuesday, according to a press release from the UW System administration office.
Gibson has been serving in his current role since 2016. Before that he was an associate vice prescient of student affairs at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana and an associate dean for student development at York College, City University of New York.
"I am honored to have this opportunity to serve as the 15th chancellor at UW-Stevens Point," Gibson said in the press release. "UW-Stevens Point has a rich history and culture, and dedicated students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community leaders that I am looking forward to joining."
UW System interim-President Tommy Thompson, in the release, called Gibson a "fantastic fit for UW-Stevens Point."
"I am confident his background in student affairs coupled with his high-energy engagement with everyone he connects with will build an even better university for the entire region and our great state," Thompson said.
Gibson will earn $247,500 as chancellor, according to the release.
Gibson will replace retiring UW-Stevens Point Chancellor Bernie Patterson, who has lead the campus since 2010. His term ends Dec. 31, 2020.
