"NATO and the United Nations: Peace in Europe? Aid for Global Health? Investigating International Law?" A UNA of Greater Milwaukee Global Issues Virtual Forum Free & Open to the Public Saturday – June 11th, 2022 from 10 – 11:30 am on Zoom https://us02web.zoom.us/j/81711176734?pwd=C5Xr7j9_jim6ouriaILhg8CnUsmIpz.1 Peace advocates have recently expressed the slogan, “Say No to NATO,” objecting to the expansion of the alliance membership since the collapse of the Soviet Union, bringing the North Atlantic Treaty Organization member nations to the borders of contemporary Russia. Led by the U.S., NATO’s response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine has raised concerns about the alliance’s mission of maintaining European security. During this UNA of Greater Milwaukee virtual Zoom forum, the following two presenters will examine the relationship of NATO to the UN and discuss the policies that have brought many European countries into conflict with Russia. Gary Shellman, Ph.D. on "NATO’s Path to the Present" UNA-GM Past President &Former Assistant Director – UWM Institute of World Affairs Gary Shellman is a historian of modern Europe and a former journalist. At the UWM Institute of World Affairs for 20 years, he developed more than 600 public programs focusing on international relations, global economics, and U.S. foreign policy, including the annual George F. Kennan Forum on International Issues. Dr. Shellman taught at UW-River Falls, UNC-Charlotte, Carroll University, Concordia University Wisconsin, and UW-Milwaukee. Harry Targ, Ph.D. on "NATO, Ukraine, and U.S. Foreign Policy: A Peace Perspective" Professor Emeritus, Purdue University - Department of Political Science Harry Targ is a professor of political science emeritus and has taught foreign policy, U.S./Latin American relations, international political economy, and labor studies in the Department of Political Science and the Program of Peace Studies at Purdue University. He has published books and articles on foreign policy, international relations, and U.S. political economy. He serves on the steering committee of Wisconsin Peace Action.
