Federal officials did not approve the Milwaukee County sheriff’s request to train jail deputies as immigration agents on the day that 23 other jurisdictions got the OK.
Milwaukee County’s omission is notable because the former sheriff who made the request, David Clarke, is one of the loudest supporters of President Donald Trump’s hard line stance on immigration.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement did not say which other jurisdictions were approved Tuesday and did not explain why Milwaukee wasn’t among them. The sheriff’s office says the application is still under review.
