The union representing bus drivers and mechanics in Milwaukee County resumed contract talks with county officials Friday, continuing negotiations that have been on and off for months.
Leaders of the Amalgamated Transit Union said their members have no confidence the Milwaukee County executive will bargain fairly, as evidenced at a rally the union held the steps of the Milwaukee County Courthouse Thursday evening. There, local union president James Macon had a colleague hold a piece of paper symbolizing the union’s endorsement of County Executive Chris Abele in an election a few years ago.
“This was our endorsement,” he said. “Guess what I’m about to do to it?”

Macon then took out a lighter and burned the piece of paper.
Macon said union members this week voted 584-6 in a no confidence vote against Abele. A spokeswoman for the county executive said Abele remains committed to improving transit, and welcomes productive feedback from everyone who shares that commitment.
