FoodShare Replacement Deadline Extended For Some Counties After Flooding

People have more time to apply for lost benefits after flooding in southeastern and southwestern Wisconsin not only damaged property but food, too.

People typically have 10 days to request replacement benefits under FoodShare, Wisconsin’s version of the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.

But after the flooding hit numerous southern counties, Gov. Scott Walker asked the federal government to extend the deadlines.

Racine, Kenosha and Walworth counties have until Friday, Aug. 11 to request replacement benefits after severe weather hit the region July 11 and July 12.

Seventeen other southern counties have until Monday, Aug. 21 after storms hit July 19-21. Those counties are: Buffalo, Crawford, Dane, Grant, Green, Iowa, Jackson, Juneau, La Crosse, Lafayette, Monroe, Pepin, Richland, Rock, Sauk, Trempealeau and Vernon.

“The federal government obviously saw it the same way the governor did, this is a way to help some of our members who are going through a difficult time,” said Michael Heifetz, administrator of the state’s Division of Health Care Access and Accountability, which implements the FoodShare program

People can apply for lost FoodShare benefits online, by phone, mail or in person.
