Wisconsin U.S. Rep. Glenn Grothman says he was personally disappointed to hear about the resignation of President Donald Trump’s National Security Advisor Michael Flynn, who stepped down late Monday amid allegations of inappropriate conversations with a Russian diplomat.

Grothman, a made the comments Tuesday in an interview with Wisconsin Public Radio, but didn’t take a position on allegations that Flynn misled Vice President Mike Pence. Grothman said Flynn either “intentionally or unintentionally” misled the vice president “on something or other.”

Flynn came under pressure just weeks into his tenure after initially denying – both to Pence and to the public – that he discussed removing sanctions against Russia with the Russian ambassador to the United States.

In his resignation letter Flynn said that he had given the White House “incomplete information” about the call which came prior to Trump’s January inauguration. The call was thought by some senior U.S. officials to be inappropriate and potentially illegal, according to The Washington Post.

Asked if he was troubled by Flynn’s discussion of sanctions with Russian officials prior to Trump’s swearing in, Grothman said that he didn’t know all of the details.

“I guess we don’t know the significance and may never know the significance,” he said.

Grothman, who represents Wisconsin’s 6th District, also criticized the recent federal appeals court decision blocking a controversial Trump order that sought to temporarily stop refugees and travelers from seven Muslim-majority countries from entering the country. Grothman urged Trump to issue a new executive order with similar aims.
