Green Bay Symphony Goes Back to School

By

The Green Bay Symphony Orchestra is reaching out to non-traditional classical music audiences. A former football player and grade school students are getting in on the act.

The symphony is going back to school in a way. Members play music for area sixth graders who also get free tickets to a concert.

It’s part of the symphony’s “Music for a Great City” program which is beginning its second year. Students unveiled a piece of visual art entitled “Symphony in Color.” It’s a mixed method piece comprised of more than 100 compact disc- sized hand colored pieces, one of which was done by Gabriel Brennan whose class listened to classical music while creating, “It was Beethoven, his third symphony. It was a lot of fun doing it and I wish we could do it again.”

The symphony is reaching out to the wider community by employing former Green Bay Packer Ahman Green, who is a guitar player, “Everybody knows football as a tough sport a violent sport. The guys who become good at it channel that emotion into something good. Same with musicians, they find their emotion in it. You can feel it when you listen. I listened to music before games, rap, hip hop, classic, whatever.”

The Green Bay Symphony Orchestra is beginning its 99th season.
