Republicans are setting aside money to implement Wisconsin’s voter ID law even though it’s been struck down by two circuit court judges.
The plan, approved by GOP lawmakers Thursday, would put the nearly $500,000 in a fund controlled by the legislature’s budget committee. If a higher court reinstates voter ID, that money would be freed up to hire specialists who would train election workers and publicize the law. Representative John Nygren co-chairs the budget committee.
“We do believe that the voter ID law will be in place for the next election, so to completely delete those positions, I think, would be inappropriate.”

The plan passed on a party line vote.
