  • Winter is Great Time to Explore Wisconsin, Reporter Says

When the weather is cold, it’s tempting to stay home. But with the right attitude, winter can be a fun time to explore Wisconsin, says Chelsey Lewis, a multimedia reporter for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

“I think we all hit that point maybe like mid-February when we’re just done,” she told WPR’s “Central Time.” “But I think if you are willing to endure the cold a little bit, and you wear the right clothing and get out there, you can really enjoy some of Wisconsin’s beautiful landscapes.”

Lewis compiled some of her favorite winter getaways in a piece for the Journal Sentinel.

When many people plan travel in the wintertime, they think to travel to a warmer state. But the season can get busy, and it can be hard to take a lot of time away from work or other obligations. That’s why Lewis recommends weekend winter getaways within the state.

Many of her recommendations are places that buzz with people in the summertime, but empty out in the winter.

For example, many people close up their cabins and cottages for the winter in Wisconsin’s northwoods. Lewis says the region becomes much more peaceful in the winter, a true quiet getaway.

And the miles and miles of ski trails at places like Minocqua Winter Park make the region a yearlong draw. Your cold-weather visit may even be a better deal for your money.

“A lot of the rates on some of the resorts are lower in the winter,” Lewis said.

That’s also the case in Door County, one of Wisconsin’s most popular tourist destinations that gets relatively quiet in the winter. You’ll likely get a better rate on lodging, and the region has great spots to cross country ski and snowshoe, she said.

In the winter, cozy lodging is especially important, Lewis said, especially after a day of outdoor sports like skiing.

In the state’s hilly Driftless region, a favorite is Kickapoo Valley Ranch, near Kickapoo Valley Reserve. The cozy cabins have wood-burning fireplaces and big porches, including stunning views of the reserve and surrounding hills.

“I like to be outside during the day,” she said. “But then you want to warm up around a nice fire at night.”

Below is a map of Lewis’ top recommendations for Wisconsin winter getaways.
