The leader of the Milwaukee teachers union is vowing to oppose any additional attempts by the state to do what critics say is a “takeover” of the city’s public schools.
Milwaukee Teachers Education Association President Kim Schroeder spoke to thousands of Milwaukee teachers at a school year kickoff rally Monday.
Schroeder said Gov. Scott Walker and Republicans in the state Legislature continue to attack public education in Milwaukee.

“We have stood up to the takeover attempt and mobilized our communities to help. We have watched this fight gain national attention, and so far have been successful. The grand total of schools taken over so far? Zero!” Schroeder said, to loud cheering.
This summer, the Milwaukee school district rejected having some low-performing schools take part in a so-called turnaround district set up by the state.
Republican lawmakers responded by threatening to cut the Milwaukee Public Schools budget.
