Trek Bicycle is voluntarily recalling almost a million bicycles with disc brakes over concerns that a quick release lever that secures the front wheel can get caught in the brakes if not properly closed.
The global bicycle maker, based in Waterloo, WI, announced the recall of hybrid and mountain bikes in the United States and Canada Wednesday.

Eric Bjorling, brand communications manager for Trek, said consumers can get a free inspection of bikes that have disc brakes and quick releases.
“And if it is found to have an affected quick release they will replace that on the spot for no charge,” Bjorling said.
One rider was paralyzed after an accident on a Trek bike. Two others suffered face and hand injuries. Bjorling said the affected bikes have a quick release lever that opens too far. Once closed, Bjorling says its safe to ride.
“The part will not open on you in the middle of a ride. The part , if left open—basically it’s misuse,” said Bjorling.
Affected models date back to 2000.
