Demolition work on Peninsula State Park’s Eagle Tower will be delayed.

The 1930s-era landmark closed last year because of structural issues from decaying wooden timbers. It was set to be taken down this month, but officials with the state Department of Natural Resources said that work has now been put off until September.

In a news release, agency officials said they’ve had trouble finding an experienced contractor to do the work. The DNR plans to rebuild Eagle Tower as close as possible to its original design while also complying with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

At 75 feet tall, the tower is a popular tourist attraction that offers panoramic views of Door County and Green Bay.

It will cost at least $200,000 to rebuild, not including the cost of labor and taking down the existing structure. Park staff are working with engineers from the federal Forest Products Laboratory in Madison to see if existing logs can be incorporated into the new tower.
