DOJ, Others, Investigate Police Officer Killing

The state Justice Department and other law enforcement agencies are investigating this morning’s killing of a police officer in the Milwaukee suburb of Wauwatosa.

Wauwatosa police say officer Jennifer Lynn Sebenawas shot numerous times while on duty between 3 and 5 a.m. and passed away from the gunshot wounds. Other Wauwatosa officers found Sebena when they went looking for her after she didn’t respond to a call on her police radio.Sebena was 30 years old and started being a solo patrol officer for the city about 18 months ago.

Wauwatosa lieutenant Gerald Witkowski won’t say much about the investigation into Sebena’s death, other than calling it a homicide and says the state justice department is leading the probe, with help from several police agencies in the Milwaukee area.

Witkowski coordinates field training for the Wauwatosa Police Department and says he knew Officer Sebena.

“Great person, great officer,” he says.”This is just an unbelievable act that has touched everbody at the dept. espeically at this time.”

Witkowski says he can only remember one other shooting of a Wauwatosa police officer in recent years, an officer who was wounded in 2009 when she responded to an armedrobbery.

Officer Sebena’s death comes amid a wave of gun violence in the nation this year, but Witkowski won’t say what type of firearm wasused in this morning’s killing.
