  • Weekly News Roundup: Judge Issues Order To Halt John Doe Probe

    Here’s a round-up of some of the top news stories from around Wisconsin this week:

    • Judge Randa Issues Second Order, Again Halting John Doe Probe: U.S. District Judge Rudolph Randa issued two orders this week to stop the John Doe investigation, which centers on conservative groups and Gov. Scott Walker’s campaign. Randa issued the first order Tuesday, saying the investigation endangered the First Amendment rights of conservative groups who supported Walker in the recall election. It was essentially squashed by the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals in Chicago the next day. The judge issued a second order on Thursday.

    • Lawmakers Approve Reporting Requirements For UW System Budgets: On Tuesday, state lawmakers approved a new plan that would require University of Wisconsin institutions to justify fund balances that get too high, although they would be allowed to run their balances down to zero. The plan is part of an effort to make the UW System’s finances more transparent.

    • National Climate Assessment Includes Predictions For Midwest: Earlier this week, the White House relseased its third National Climate Assessment, which had some bleak predictions for the future. The report included predictions for the Upper Midwest: changes in fish species in the Great Lakes, changes in the composition of the region’s forests, increased heat wave intensity and frequency, and reduced water quality.
