JOB SUMMARY
WPR's Director of Engineering supervises the team that provides technical support to WPR studios statewide, the technical operations center in Madison, and WPR's traffic department. The WPR Engineering department manages and coordinates all network equipment activities, technical operations, network program delivery, studio maintenance, broadcasting, and IT equipment infrastructure. The Director establishes procedures and policy for operation of equipment to ensure network performance meets standards of quality that comply with Federal Communications Commission (FCC) rules and regulations. They oversee capital project management planning, budgeting, and execution. Reports to the Director of Wisconsin Public Radio and works closely with engineers at the Educational Communications Board, which maintains WPR's transmitters statewide, as well as with the Digital/Online team and the Information Technology Department.
EDUCATION
Preferred
Bachelor's Degree
Fields of computer science, information systems, engineering, or equivalent professional experience preferred.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
1. At least five years broadcast engineering experience.
2. At least 2 years professional experience managing staff with varying levels of experience.
3. Professional or related experience managing IT networks and systems.
4. Professional experience with operation, design and maintenance of radio digital studio broadcast and production systems.
5. Demonstrated experience leading the development of a strategic plan and bringing that plan through to implementation.
6. Experience managing cross functional projects from planning to completion with multiple stakeholders.
7. Demonstrated experience with respectful and effective leadership, mentoring and coaching, open communications, and support of a diverse workforce.
8. Professional experience with budget management and equipment purchasing.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
1. In-depth knowledge of FCC rules and regulations pertaining to broadcast compliance.
2. Experience creating documentation related to technical systems and communicating technical information to non-technical staff.
3. Experience with WideOrbit or other broadcast automation systems.
4. Knowledge/understanding of RF transmissions systems and theory.
5. Experience in public broadcasting.
6. Knowledge of IT security best practices.
7. Society of Broadcast Engineers certifications.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Directs and coordinates station and/or network activities related to acquisition, installation, and maintenance of studio, broadcasting, and IT equipment and infrastructure. Establishes procedures for operation of equipment to ensure performance meets standards of quality and rules and regulations set by the Federal Communications Commission.
- 25% Provides technology leadership, planning, management, and supervision of all aspects of the unit to ensure high quality media production and delivery
- 5% Acts as Chief Operator and/or directs Chief Operator duties as defined by the Federal Communications Commission
- 10% Prepares annual budget and multi-year capital equipment plan for the unit and directs expenditures within budget parameters
- 15% Confers with management and stakeholders to develop long-range projects and plans to support station and/or network's strategic priorities
- 10% Develops procedures, equipment, and documentation standards for technical aspects of station and/or network operation. Creates and maintains records and compliance with pertinent state and federal law and regulatory agencies
- 10% Directs activities related to maintenance and safety regulations of public media technical facilities and infrastructure
- 10% Develops and enacts disaster recovery plans for technical operation of the station and/or network
- 15% Exercises supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of at least 2.0 full-time equivalent (FTE) employees

The expected minimum salary for this position is $100,000. Actual pay will depend on experience and qualifications.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
This position will be based in Madison, Wisconsin with the expectation that travel to the regional public radio stations will be required.
