University of Wisconsin-Marshfield Wood County and University of Wisconsin-Marathon County are working with central Wisconsin high schools to attract students from China, with a goal of having Chinese nationals enroll full-time and graduate.
The schools’ proposal calls for 30 Chinese students to visit central Wisconsin — 15 in Marshfield and 15 in Wausau — for an extended stay this summer. The students will spend time at the local high schools, and visit the state Capitol and the Camp Manitowish nature center. Marshfield School Superintendent Dee Wells thinks some of them will like what they see.
“The idea is that some of those students would want to come back to one of the school districts in central Wisconsin and enroll here for a year,” said Wells. “A high school diploma from a United States school is highly valued in China, and they are looking to also have their students educated in the United States as far as a college diploma goes.”
