Umami has been called the fifth flavor and described as the savory flavor of perfectly seared meat, soy sauce, or a hearty broth taste. We talk to the chef behind the famous Umami restaurant chain to learn more about adding explosive flavors to our foods. We also talk to the the founder of the National White Privilege Conference about his guide for white, female teachers who are in classrooms teaching black boys and take a look at new research from the CDC about suicide rates increasing in the United States.

    New research from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that suicide rates have increased for nearly every state since 1999. Wisconsin saw a nearly 26 percent increase in the suicide rate over the last two decades. Dr. Patrick Remington, professor and associate dean of public health at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, joins us to talk about the research and ways to prevent suicide.

    The book titled “The Guide for White Women Who Teach Black Boys” brings up tough conversations about race, and a growing number of schools in Wisconsin, where teachers make up nearly 70 percent of the workforce, are turning to it to bridge cultural gaps. In a special collaboration, Wisconsin Life producer Maureen McCollum takes us inside a classroom trying to implement some of the book’s lessons, and we sit down with one of the book’s editors.
