Superior is receiving a multi-million dollar facelift for one of its major roadways. The project will upgrade the city’s storm water system, improve travel and safety.
Diana Maas with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation said the $23 million project will take place on the east and the west ends on Belknap Street.
“So 2017 construction on Belknap Street will include the book ends of the project,” she said. “The west portion is from Banks Ave. to John Ave. and the east portion is Birch Ave. to E. 7th Street.”

Maas said Belknap’s reconstruction north and south of U.S. 2 will include the addition of left turn lanes to improve traffic flow and increase safety. She said they’re going to replace failing pavement and install a new storm sewer system that includes drainage.
“And that drainage system will eliminate a bunch of those thumps that you feel as you drive down the road,” she said. “Reconstruction of the roadway includes roadway safety and access. We are making improvements to utilities, parking, upgrading sidewalks, street lighting, and partial bike accommodations.”
Maas said the first phase of the project has already started and will end in November. She said construction will start again next April and wrap up next fall.
