ACLU Asking Federal Court To Expand Voter ID Options

The American Civil Liberties Union will be in federal court in Milwaukee on Monday trying to expand the types of identification cards the state of Wisconsin accepts for voting.

The ACLU contends that “thousands of Wisconsinites face barriers to the polls due to the forms of ID mandated under the state’s voter ID law.” The group will ask federal Judge Lynn Adelman to expand the list of acceptable identification to include IDs for veterans, students attending technical colleges, and out-of-state driver’s licenses.

On Friday, Gov. Scott Walker said the state will follow what the courts say.

“But I think what we’ve seen overwhelmingly is, unlike other states, we offer state-issued identification for free upon request that that really removes one of the more legitimate barriers that other states might have,” Walker said. “We don’t have here in the state.”

The ACLU said it’s “unconscionable” that veterans can’t use their government issued IDs to vote.
