This week marks Wisconsin’s 10th annual Museum Week, which runs from May 12 to 17 and culminates with a celebration of International Museum Day on May 18.

According to Sarah Kapellusch, Wisconsin Federation of Museums vice president, Museum Week is “an annual celebration where museums all across the state come together and host special events and tours.

“It’s a way the Wisconsin Museum Federation can say ‘thank you’ to all the museums out there and for all the hard work they do,” she said.

Museum Week began in 1977, and there are about 350 museums in Wisconsin, which include “corporate museums all the way to our small, local history museums,” according to Kapellusch.

Kapellusch also works at the Wisconsin Veterans Museum.

“We can come together and tell veterans’ stories, said Kapellusch. Often times, these stories are very difficult for veterans to tell themselves. They can come with their families … and feel safe to share their experiences.”

In celebration of Wisconsin Museum Week, the WPR show “Central Time” asked listeners to share their favorite museums. Here are a few of the responses:

    • Discovery World in Milwaukee

“I really, really love a little bit of the new and a little bit of the old. They have a wonderful model of a sailing ship there, then you can go outside and they have an actual sailing ship.” -Tom from La Crosse

    • National Brewery Museum in Potosi

“One of the favorites I have is the Potosi Brewing Museum. It’s over on the edge of the state near Iowa, and they have a wonderful restored working brewery. They’ve really done a great job restoring a gorgeous historic building.” -Paula from Beloit

    • John Michael Kohler Arts Center in Sheboygan

“I have to say I absolutely love the John Michael Kohler Arts Center in Sheboygan. There are amazing things to do there and it’s free.” -Deborah from Brown Deer

    • Cable Natural History Museum in Cable

“My favorite museum is the Cable Natural History Museum. They just opened a new exhibit called Nature’s Superheroes: Adventures with Adaptations. They have comic pages blown up to huge size, outlining the adventures of several animals with superhero powers.” -Emily from Cable

    • Hoard Historical Museum in Fort Atkinson

“My favorite museum is the dairy museum in Fort Atkinson. They’ve got great displays running through the history of dairy production in Wisconsin. They’ve got a Lincoln section with his connections to Wisconsin. On the Fourth of July they have an ice cream social.” -Richard from Madison

    • Elroy Historical Society Museum in Elroy

“I appreciate the small community museums. Elroy has a museum that tells about the community itself. One time 60 train cars came through Elroy in one day.” -Blake from Black River Falls

    • Menominee Logging Museum in Keshena

“They have and old logging camp with big saws. They have it set up the way it was back in the early 1900s. They have a lot of the machinery they used and the mess hall.” -Tina from Keshena
