12/08/2012 (Rainbow Beans and Rice)

SEGMENT #1

#1 Knoxville, TN           Low/No Carb diets
Z explains that ALL diets (including the Atkins Diet) in America have about a 5% success rate within two years - meaning that 95% of the folks on them gain the lost weight right back. Z recommends a better balanced diet - the Mediterranean diet.

#2 OK City, OK           Peeling Lips
Z explains that toothpaste or mouthwash can contain chemicals that may irritate the lips. He recommends dry baking soda for just a few days. If that works, he suggests Baking Soda or other non-fluoride (Sensodyne) toothpastes. He also recommends a Rx hydrocortisone cream 2.5% for a few times a day.

Topic                                Overweight doesn't equal overeating
Z discusses a Journal of the American Dietetic Association study that showed that overweight people weren't constantly overeating, just eating poorly (more calories) and far less active than their counterparts. Z says that it's portion control and limiting "meal" calories.

#3 El Paso, TX               Severe Exzema
Z reminds the caller that eczema flare-ups can occur out of nowhere and aren't always associated with food allergies and not to eliminate all fods from her diet just due to a flare-up.

E-mail                             Rapid Fire
T reads e-mails from several listeners with questions on topics including: itchy skin, B12 vitamins, Lyme's Disease, Zoloft, ALS and taking baths.

SEGMENT  #2

RECIPE: Rainbow Beans and Rice

#4 St. Louis, MO       Sugar Substitutes/Nutrition
Z explain that any sweetener (unless artificial) when taken in the same amount, is going to have the same affect and issues (read: increase in insulin/diabetes). One is not more refined and/or healthier than the other.

#5 Cloquet, MN       No Sense of Taste/Smell
Z explain that any sweetener (unless artificial) when taken in the same amount, is going to have the same affect and issues (read: increase in insulin/diabetes). One is not more refined and/or healthier than the other.

E-mail                          Black VS. White Pepper
T challenges Z's claim that there is a difference to the tatse in whie and black pepper, as Z asserted in a previous program. Z fails the taste taste!

SEGMENT #3

TOPIC:                         Avastin loses FDA approval
Z and T discuss the controversy surrounding the breast cancer drug, Avastin. Z notes how this issue involves a 7 Billion dollar a year drug. in 1998, the FDA accelerated their approval, but after years of lackluster results and (in some cases) serious side effects, an FDA panel has voted 6-0 against using Avastin approval for use in breast cancer.

#6 Sturgeon Bay, WI   Sciatic Pain Relief
Z explains the sciatic pain can happen randomly, but he warns against hard chairs - which can often enflame sciatic pain. Z also recommends "range-of-motion" activites for the back and stretching before job. He also recommends 2 Aleve, twice a day to help with pain.

Mythbuster:                  Prune Hands
T reads a myth about "prune hands" or wrinkly fingers once they're wet. Z explains that while it was thought that it was due to water absorption, it's actually an evolutionary trait that allowed for better grip in wet living conditions. That's why it only occurs on fingers/toes.

#7 Grady, AL               Tinnitus Troubles
Z reminds us that there are no cures for Tinnitus (but there are many things in medicine that don't have cures, so they are dealth with). Z recommends a hearing test for a hearing aid. When an aid amplifies normal sounds, the tinnitus will be asier to handle. Also, you want to have ambient sound in every situation (sleeping, quiet rooms, etc.)

E-mail                           Beneath, WI (Grammar Police)
T reads an e-mail from Deputy Dee in WI who takes issue w/ Z's (and other Chicagoans) use of the phrse "down to WI". She informs them that WI is above them and argues it's their pious Chicago attitude that feeds the incorrect phrasing. Z laughs and agrees!
