#1 Coeur D’Alene, ID Massaged Foot, Hurt Hand
Kathi hurt her hand while massaging her foot. Z recommends a high strength anti-inflammatory drug (2 pills per day) for 6 weeks. Z recommends splinting her thumb for 1-2 weeks and resting the joint. Z then says she should examine which activities make the thumb worse. If all this fails, she should get an x-ray to see what is wrong.
Topic Math Causes Maladies
Fear of math ignites same part in brain as does a bad breakup and real physical pain. Z emphasizes that we should look at our high school curriculum and alter it accordingly.
#2 Madison, WI If the Shoe Doesn’t Fit
Brian tells Z that he can’t find any shoes that don’t cause pain in his legs. Z tells Brian that he needs a neurological evaluation by his doc. Brian says his insurance won’t cover it, so Z advises questioning insurance company and checking the doc’s write-up – because they should! Z says it could be either rheumatoid arthritis or a neurological problem.
#3 Seattle, WA Wedding Weight
Sarah wants to know how to lose weight before her wedding in 6 mo. She wants to lose 2 dress sizes. Z says she needs to eat breakfast, use an app like “Lose It” to track her calories and progress, and make sure she’s sweating when she’s exercising.
E-mail Torn Bicep (4 Cent Advice)
Felipe in Logan, UT wants to know if his doc’s advice that there’s nothing he can do about his torn bicep is true? Z says that the surgery is not very successful and that his doc is right.

#4 Mocksville, NC Moldy Sponge Mouth
David went through a period when certain foods started tasting like a moldy sponge. It’s gone now. Z says that it could be his sinuses or due to a head injury – but neither apply to David. Z then suggests that it may be linked to bad pine nuts from China that he may have eaten months ago in Italian food.

Veronica from Ithaca, NY – Aleve lasts longer than Advil, but both effective. Travis from Georgia – melatonin can be used as a sleep aid, and he should double the recommended dosage. Bill – keep swollen ankles raised, see doc, and check to see if he’s on BP drug Procardia, which can cause ankle swelling. Robbin in Tennessee – for immune system try multivitamin, but there’s no specific vitamin. Kathleen – no, Z does not thnk Pure Green Bean Coffee Extract can help people lose weight. Gerald in Wisconsin Rapids – eat yogurt and keep in mouth 2-3 times/day to eradicate canker sores.

TOPIC: How to Deal With Catastrophe (Hurricane Sandy)
Z and T how to deal with disaster and your children. Kids need to feel safe, so touch and console them. Talk to them about the disaster, and talk to them honestly about it. Z says expect little kids to have regressive behavior.
#5 Wichita Falls, TX Horrible Headaches
Jessica wants to know the root of her recent debilitating headaches. She is currently taking Topamax (a seizure med), but is weary of the drug. Z recommends one daily aspirin tablet per day, avoiding caffeine, tracking what foods aggravate the headaches, or taking Aleve twice a day for 4-6 weeks. Z then recommends a beta blocker called Inderal (propranolol=generic). He says to use Topamax only if she must.
Mythbuster: Bathroom Bugs
Jen in Cambridge, WI wants to know if you can catch venereal diseases or get pregnant from public toilets. Z says, “only if you have sex on the toilet” Z adds that women’s bathrooms are in fact dirtier than mens! Z recommends using toilette and antibacterial sanitizers in the bathroom.
#6 Norman, OK Road Food Rules
Z speaks with Brendan in Norman, OK who is a coach for a woman’s golf team and struggles with eating on the road (specifically Taco Bell). Z recommends finding something on the Taco Bell menu that is healthy and really focusing on keeping overall daily calorie counts down. Z likes getting chicken salads from fast food restaurants.
#7 Alamogordo, NM Arm Numbness
Z speaks to Mike in Alamogordo, NM about how his arm goes to sleep while driving. Z says he needs to be evaluated by a doctor and get his blood cholesterol levels checked. Z suggests three possibilities: Peripheral vascular disease in his arteries, neurological problem in his armpits or a cardiac issue.

T reads an e-mail from Dr. Marc, a University of Oklahoma mssssusic professor who corrects Z’s previous mistake of attributing the song “Don’t Worry, Be Happy” to Bob Marley. It is in fact by Bobby McFerrin.
