11/03/2012 (Millet Burgers with Olives, Sun-Dried Tomatoes and Pecorino)

SEGMENT #1

#1 Knoxville, TN                   Bruises Easily
Caller is concerned that she bruises too easily (even though she skydives!). Z ensures that she is not taking any medications like steroids and advises against taking aspirin. Z says if she was bruising abnormally he would recommend clotting tests, but doesn’t think that this is abnormal. Z says she may just be an easy-bruiser, but recommends eating cruciferous vegetables (cauliflower, broccoli, brussel sprouts) for vitamin K.

#2 Madison, WI         Leg-Groin Toothache Pain
Jed from Madison wants to know what is causing the toothache-like pain radiating from his left leg to his groin. Jed is very active, so Z believes it is a pinched nerve in his back/lumbarspine. Z recommends a CT scan of the spine. Z advises getting an EMG to see if there is a nerve that is affected and an MRI to see if there’s a disc that’s pressing on a nerve  – but most importantly advises that Jed see a neurologist.

Topic                                Premature Puberty Strikes Boys
Z and T discuss how boys are now experiencing puberty earlier, just as girls have begun to. Z cites a number of causes that were once thought to cause this in women, including estrogen in food supply from being given to the animals we eat and obesity. Z says we don’t know the cause of premature puberty in boys, though.  It is good to be aware that this is the new norm and address puberty earlier.

#3 Trevor, WI              Anemic Blood Donor
Z says that behavioral troubles are often hard to pin down. He recommends counseling for the parents and their son.

E-mail                               Peanut Butter & Chron’s (Judge Zorba)
T reads an e-mail from a listener named Dan who offers up his solution for dealing with Tennis Elbow: Bowling. He claims it helped loosen his stiffness and he bowls with each arm! Z loves it.

SEGMENT  #2

RECIPE: Millet Burgers with Olives, Sun-Dried Tomatoes and Pecorino From guest author Mark Scarbrough of Grains Mains.

#4 Chicago, IL    Are Vitamins Necessary?
Caller wonders if vitamin supplements are necessary. Z says that he takes a multivitamin that says “Multivitamin with minerals USP” every day, so he recommends LeSean do so as well. Z also recommends adding 1,000-2,000 extra mg of vitamin D to the multivitamin. Z thinks that even if you eat healthy, you’re probably not getting all the vitamins you need.]

#5 5 Knoxville, TN    Endless Infant Ear Infections
Caller is worried about her 14 month old son, who has already had 3 ear infections. Z says 95% of ear infections are cured without antibiotics, but antibiotics do decrease crying time, so we over treat them. This leads to antibiotic resistance in children and ultimately adults. Folk remedies like ear candling, taking certain foods and popping ears don’t work. Z recommends keeping child in healthy environment. Sometimes tubes can be better than taking antibiotics b/c they allow ears to drain.

E-mail                         Gummies Gone Wrong (Stump the Doc)
T reads an e-mail from Sherry, who overdosed on fruit gummy candy. She wonders if this could be the cause of her extreme stomach pain. Z assures her that, yes, 15 packs of gummies a day is NOT a good move.]

SEGMENT #3

TOPIC:                         Beans Aren’t Funny (They’re Healthy!)
Z and T discuss findings published in the Archives of Internal Medicine proclaiming that downing a cup of beans or lentils every day may help people with type 2 diabetes control their blood sugar and possibly reduce their risk of heart attacks and stroke. Participants in the study dropped their hemoglobin from 7.4 to 6.9. Z says that means that 1 cup of beans may be equivalent to a whole pill that someone suffering from diabetes would have to take.

#6 Ashland, WI          Cancer Survivor Needs to Lose Weight
Z says yes! He explains that the FDA is currently calling for that recommendation right now and that the response has been ironic - given the controversy surrounding young women receiving the vaccine. There's been a muted response to boys being given the vaccine, which Z says speaks to a double standard in preventative care.

#7 Knoxville, TN        Chondrodermatitis (of the Ear)
Z speaks Jimmy in Knoxville who suffers from Chondrodermatitis, a common, benign, painful condition of the helix or antihelix of the ear which often affects middle-aged or older men. Jimmy had the painful portion removed by his doc, but now the disease has returned. He wants to know if he has to get the other part removed. Z says that the problem is likely the fact that the original surgery did not get rid of all of the cells. He recommends revisiting his dermatologist and looking into the “Mohs technique” to ensure that excision is made to a depth at which the tissue is microscopically free of problem cells. Z also recommends using sunscreen.

Mythbuster:                Green Tea Reduces Cholesterol
Z says that the research weighs in favor of the positive effects of green tea. It is not a miracle drink, but it does prove to have beneficial health effects.

#8 Duluth, MN            Migraines and Midnight Terrors
Z speaks to Lena, who wants to know if her recurrent migraines could be tied to her lifelong vivid nightmares. Z says that the two could be tied together, and asks Lena if she has anxiety. Nightmares can be caused by many things - 'perambulate' sleep, stress, medication, etc. He mostly recommends good sleep hygiene and potentially the drug Gabapentin. If all that fails, Z recommends undergoing a sleep study with a sleep specialist.

E-mail                          Nate’s Theme Song
T introduces a voicemail from Nate in Shorewood, WI, who sang his own rendition of a theme song for ZPOYH. T wonders if Nate could have gone to the same grade school as himself.
