10/27/2012 (Parsley Hummus)

SEGMENT #1

#1 Chicago, IL                  FitBit OK to Wear on Bra?
Caller is concerned that there will be side effects from wearing her FitBit exercise device on her bra. Z assures her that this should not be a problem, but to be certain that it transmits pedometer results as accurately from the bra as it does from the hip.

#2 Knoxville, TN               E-Cigs Better than Regular Cigs?
Luke asks whether electronic cigarettes are better than regular cigarettes if they’re helping him quit smoking. Z says e-cigs can be laced with Nicotine and other chemicals, and you are still inhaling smoke. Z says that they  may be worth it to stop smoking, but they are not benign. Z recommends Nicotine gum, the patch, Bupropion under the name Zyban, Chantix or hypnosis. Z suggests that when you want to smoke, go to the bathroom, sit for a minute, and ask yourself if you really want that puff. T then makes Luke promise to Z & T that he will never smoke again.

Topic                                  Pregnancy Prevention
Z and T discuss pregnancy prevention techniques, and the surprising difference in rates of effectiveness that result from misuse of contraceptives. Women forget their birth control pills (8% failure rate), and men don’t apply condoms correctly (15% failure rate). Hormonal implants and IUDs have the lowest failure rates. More information in our list of resources on our resources page.

#3 Oklahoma City, OK      How to Lose Weight with Arthritis?
Z says that behavioral troubles are often hard to pin down. He recommends counseling for the parents and their son.

SEGMENT  #2

RECIPE: “Parsley Hummus!”

From guest author Martha Rose Shulman of the New York Times online column "Recipes for Health"

#4 Columbus, WI    Can Kids Get Too Much Exercise?
Caller, Chris, wonders if 3 miles is too much for his 5-year-old to run. Z says that unless the kid is noticeably exhausted or in pain, exercise is never a bad thing.

#5 Beloit, WI           Soda Makes Me “Drunk”
Dan from Beloit wants to know why when he drinks certain sodas, he feels drunk. Z tells him that it may be from diabetes and a spike in blood sugar. Z assures there is no alcohol in soda.

E-mail                       Rapid Fire
T bombards Z with some rapid fire questions: Difference between high fructose corn syrup v. Syrup? (one is from corn – same number calories), Poison Ivy cure? (don’t get it in the first place – wash clothes), Legitimacy in Olive Oil Grapefruit Juice gall bladder cleanse? (there is no way to cleanse gall bladder), Irritable bladder cure? (don’t eat broccoli, cauliflower), Z's favorite rice cooker brand? (Hitachi), Does orange juice have less vitamins than oranges? (No, but exposure to air results in vitamin loss).

SEGMENT #3

TOPIC:                                Antibiotic Resistant UTI Infections
Z and T discuss a study done at Oregon State University finding that people are taking too strong of medications for UTI infections, and are becoming resistant to the treatments. The old Nitrofurantoin and Sulfa drugs work 90% of the time, but now we’re overusing the even stronger Quinolones and becoming resistant to them. Z recommends asking your doc for the older drug, because it is better in the long run so you don’t develop resistance.

#6 Rochester Hills, MI       Thorn Stuck in Toe
Z speaks with Judy who is concerned about a thorn in her toe that the skin has grown over. Z says most of the time it dissolves, but it can take a really long time. Z says she doesn’t have to do anything about it. If the wound were open and infected, you’d be able to get to it, but if it’s deep underneath he says leave it alone.

Mythbuster:                        Stress Shrinks Brain?
Z addresses a Yale study that found that depression and stress shrink the brain. They do decrease neural pathways, but don’t actually shrink your brain. Z says our brains actually shrink when we get older, but that brain volume doesn’t correlate to memory loss or executive function. Depression probably changes synaptic function, but doesn’t shrink the brain. Myth!

#7 Buffalo, NY                    Guy Wanting to Gain
Z speaks to Mike, who is 6’8”, 170lbs, and wants to gain weight. Z recommends drinking a soy protein shake of 300-400 calories just before bed. Z advises, however, that gaining 10-15 lbs like Mike wants to do will be very difficult, if not impossible.

E-mail                                  What’s So Funny
T reads an e-mail from Edwin, who wants to know why Zorba laughs at the opening to the show Z says he just is a laughing type of guy. “Don’t worry, be happy”, he says, like the song.
