Wisconsin’s Senators Have Contrasting Reactions To Iran Nuclear Deal

Baldwin Says She's 'Hopeful' About The Tentative Agreement, Whereas Johnson Expresses Skepticism

A possible agreement on limiting Iran’s nuclear program has been met with starkly different reactions from Wisconsin’s two U.S. senators.

Sen. Tammy Baldwin said in Milwaukee on Thursday afternoon that she’s expecting more detailed briefings on the announcement in Switzerland about a framework for Iran and nuclear weapons, but she said the news is encouraging.

“You know, it was just a few months ago where most administration officials were saying (there was) less than a 50-50 chance that this would come to fruition. I’m hopeful. I have to say I think this is good news,” she said.

Sen. Ron Johnson, however, said that if President Barack Obama truly believes the framework will prevent Iran from getting a nuclear weapon, he ought to prove that to Congress and the American people. Johnson said he’ll introduce or support a bill requiring Senate ratification of the final deal later this year.
