Despite cuts to AmeriCorps due to federal sequestration, Wisconsin will get over $9 million to help nonprofit organizations.
AmeriCorps is a domestic community service program that was started by former President Bill Clinton. It is sometimes compared to the Peace Corps.
U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin, D-Wisc, says because of federal funding cuts, competition for the grants was strong. She says the AmeriCorps program is a way for the country to solve problems: help disadvantaged youth, build affordable housing and get people health care.

“National service is a critical and cost-effective approach to solving national problems. It helps our local organizations really expand their reach and their impact by engaging citizens and bringing communities together.”
Some of the Wisconsin agencies that received matching grants through AmeriCorps are Teach for America, Public Allies of Milwaukee and Wisconsin Health Corps.
