Wisconsin Tax Revenue Increases By 4 Percent

Wisconsin tax collections for the fiscal year ending in June were up $71 million. Gov. Scott Walker says that’s “good news for Wisconsin.”

Budget co-chairs Sen. Alberta Darling, R-River Hills, and Rep. John Nygren, R-Marinette, says the fact revenue is up 4 percent this year shows the state’s economy is rebounding.

The executive director of the Wisconsin Taxpayers Alliance, Todd Berry, says estimates of tax collections done as recently as May were pretty much on the mark. “It’s good news, but they need that little bit of extra money because when they passed the budget they pulled all the surpluses back down.”

The nonpartisan Legislative Fiscal Bureau says the most recent state budget will create a $505 million shortfall. Majority Republicans nearly doubled an income tax cut, and they also increased funding for public schools and expanded private school vouchers.
