  • Posting A Timeline On Facebook's Founder

In the 10 years since the founding of social media giant Facebook, a lot of people have been willing to share their information online. Organizers of a Wisconsin-based project are looking to return the favor by collecting in one place the public statements of Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg.

Michael Zimmer is an assistant professor of information studies at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and his students have compiled the “Zuckerberg Files,” including interviews, news articles, speech transcripts and other public statements from Zuckerberg. The site went live last fall, and is still adding content, with new additions to mark this week’s anniversary of the founding of Facebook.

While he started with an interest in tracking Zuckerberg’s views on privacy and user rights, Zimmer said he realized that there could be a more general use.

“This could actually be a useful public service to put all this together for anybody who wants to do this kind of research can have access to that,” he said.

Zimmer describes himself as a critic of Facebook’s privacy practices. He said Zuckerberg has focused too much on providing users with control over privacy settings, while not being proactive enough in making the company responsible for protecting privacy.

“I’m hoping by making the archive available that we can starting studying this a little bit more, and perhaps even convince him, that having control isn’t enough always,” he said.

Zimmer said more than a hundred researchers are already making use of the files, for a variety of topics.

“Some have an interest, like me, in terms of privacy or ethics,” he said. “Others want to study him as an entrepreneur. Some want to be able to study his language as a leader, or what it means to run a company like this, and how he’s change and matured, and what we can learn from his style.”
