Wanted: Wisconsin’s Oldest Running Fridge

By

If you have Wisconsin’s oldest working electric refrigerator and are willing to part with it, it could be worth a cool $1,000.

Wisconsin’s Focus on Energy energy efficiency program has started a contest: Turn in your old working refrigerator for recycling, and you will get $50. You’ll also save up to $150 a year in energy costs, and, if a check of manufacturer model numbers shows your fridge was the oldest one turned in during the contest, you’ll be paid $1,000. Focus’s Rich Marshall says when similar contests have been held in other states, people have turned in fridges from as far back as the 1930s.

Marshall says older refrigerators typically use about three times as much energy as a modern Energy Star fridge. He says with the savings on electricity from disconnecting the old units, you can pay for a new fridge within a few years. The oldest fridge contest ends August 31.
