Walker Won’t Commit On Length Of Tuition Freeze

Gov. Scott Walker won’t say whether he plans to freeze tuition at state universities for one year or two in the next two-year state budget.

University of Wisconsin System President Ray Cross told Madison’s WISC-TV Thursday that he thought the governor was open to a one-year tuition freeze next year, which would let the university system increase tuition the year after that.

Asked about the possibility in Madison, Walker would not commit.

“We haven’t made a final decision on whether or not it’s a two-year freeze,” Walker said. “It could be — I’m not proposing this, so let me qualify this — a tuition reduction. Those are all things that are on the table between now and … February when we introduce our budget.”

Walker has frozen tuition at the UW for the past four years.
