Walker Says Tax Reform Roundtables Weren’t A Waste Of Time

Report Compiled By Lieutenant Governor, Revenue Secretary Included No Recommendations

Gov. Scott Walker says a series of nearly two-dozen “tax reform roundtables” run by Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch were not a waste of time, even though they never resulted in any formal recommendations.

A report by Kleefisch and Revenue Secretary Rick Chandler concluded only that people thought taxes were too high and property taxes were the most burdensome. It made no recommendations.

Walker said it makes more sense for him to recommend tax cuts in his budget next year.

“As opposed to that task force making a specific recommendation as to the level of property tax cuts, we’re really going to take and balance all the other priorities we have in this budget and then see how far we can go on property tax relief. And potentially maybe some on income tax relief, but I think we’re largely going to be focused on property taxes,” said Walker.

Walker said the next budget will be “tight.” The state currently faces a projected $2.2 billion shortfall.
