Gov. Scott Walker says he’s trying to stay out of the debate over what could be a high-profile Republican congressional primary in August between state Sen. Glenn Grothman, R-West Bend, and U.S. Rep. Tom Petri, R-Fond du Lac.
Grothman announced on Thursday that he plans to challenge Petri for his 6th Congressional District seat. Walker says during Petri’s 35 years in office, the congressman has done good things for the state.
“I think in many ways he’s been good,” said Walker. “We worked with him on … transportation and other related issues.”

Grothman says Petri doesn’t have the “sense of urgency” to deal with issues like the federal debt. Petri says he has a record of pragmatic conservatism, will run a strong campaign, and expects to win in August and November.
