Wal Mart Workers to Walk Out?

Some Walmart workers in Wisconsin say they plan to walk off the job today or tomorrow, to protest low pay and other issues.

One such worker, Kenosha resident Mary Pat Tifft says she’s worked at Walmart nearly 25 years. She plans to speak out against some of the company’s practices at a rally tonight. Tifft says says low wages remain a big problem.

“We get paid poverty level wages ,and unaffordable health care,” she says.

Tifft says she doesn’t want shoppers to boycott Walmart, just become more aware of the workers’ status.Tifft says she doesn’t think the company will retaliate against her.

“Well of course I worry about it, but we stay within our legal rights,” she says.

The United Food and Commercial Workerswould like to get Walmart workers into aunion, and has been helping organize Walmart protests around the nation.There are also protests scheduled for tomorrow in Milwaukee and near Madison.Walmart declined to make anyone available for a phone interview, but in a lengthy written statement, the firm says only a handful of Walmart associates are taking part in the protest events. The company says more than one million of its employees will be working throughout the holiday weekend, including many working all day today, on Thanksgiving.
