Vos Says He’s Open To Mileage-Based Vehicle Registration Fee

Republican state Assembly Speaker Robin Vos said on Wednesday he’s open to passing a new mileage-based vehicle registration fee to pay for roads in Wisconsin.

Vos said he hasn’t talked to any Republicans who think the governor’s plan to borrow $1.3 billion for roads is the right approach. Vos told the Wisconsin Counties Association that he’s open to finding new revenue sources instead, including mileage-based registration fees.

“So, you know, $75 for the first 15,000 (miles), maybe a higher amount if you drive more than that. Because we’ve got to find new revenue sources to bring into the transportation fund or else we’re going to see a declining transportation system, which ultimately will hurt our economy,” said Vos.

State Sen. Tom Tiffany, R-Hazelhurst, told the Counties Association that the bonding in Walker’s roads budget was his “biggest heartburn,” although Tiffany said he wanted to look for savings in the Department of Transportation before he looked at raising revenue.
