A new hotline to report waste, fraud and abuse in the University of Wisconsin System has gone live and officials say it’s already ringing.

Last fall, the UW Board of Regents Audit Committee approved the creation of the hotline, along with a corresponding website, both run by a company called The Network.

UW System spokesman Alex Hummel said they’ve already received a handful of calls.

“I think it’s just a way to make sure that all our employees around the system understand that if this is going to work, if we’re actually going to find instances of waste, fraud and abuse, that they’ve got to play a part in it,” said Hummel.

The hotline cost $39,000 to set up and will cost another $35,000 annually.

Hummel said investigations into waste, fraud and abuse will be handled by the UW System, but reports will be available to the Legislature upon request.
