A proposed $75 million dollar science building on the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point campus is needed for additional research space, according to school officials.
Earlier this week, the City of Stevens Point Plan Commission voted unanimously to approve the project, which now goes before the full city council. UWSP facilities planning director Carl Rasmussen said the current science building hasn’t been changed since it was built during the Cold War, when he said it was described as a “Sputnik building.” Rasmussen said the demand for research at the university level has grown since then.
“More and more, it’s the expected norm of society as well as the instructors that we recruit to have research space,” said Rasmussen.
