UW Regents To Vote On Resolution Affirming Free Speech

The University of Wisconsin System regents plan to vote on a resolution affirming their commitment to free speech as legislators consider a bill that would punish UW students who disrupt campus speakers.

The Republican bill would require the regents to suspend or expel students if they receive complaints about conduct during a speech or presentation. The regents also would be required to adopt a policy calling for system schools to remain neutral on public controversies.

The resolution states that the regents and system officials will review existing policies to ensure each campus offers an environment where civil discussions can occur. The resolution states that the regents and system officials will be committed to freedom of speech during the review.
