University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire is offering first-of-its-kind class on the use of drones this fall. The technology is being used to help farmers.

With the help of a $418,000 grant from the UW System’s Geographic Educative Initiative, professors Joe and Christina Hupy will show students how to fit drones with cameras and sensors to measure things like crop temperatures and water evaporation. Joe Hupy said that data can be stitched together to create maps for agriculture.

“If you have imagery from a field from one week and then you compare it to the next week you might see a spread of a particular disease, you might see where you have waterlogging issues or drought issues in the soil,” he said.
