U.S. Coast Guard Warns Of Dangerous Conditions On Lake Michigan

The U.S. Coast Guard is warning people to stay away from parts of Lake Michigan because of dangerous conditions.

Chief Petty Officer Alan Haraf said the southern part of the lake was churned up by Sunday’s snowstorm.

“It typically takes Lake Michigan a day or a day and a half to calm down after a storm like this. So we expect the waves to subside later today, but in the meantime the main thing is for anyone that’s planning to go out to stay well away from the lake,” he said.

Haraf said the warning applies not only to ATV or snowmobile riders, but also to sightseers or joggers. He said that people can slip on the ice or get pulled into the lake by a large wave.

The warning is for areas of the lake south of Milwaukee, down to Chicago and east to Indiana.
