Two Healthcare Systems Plan Joint Projects In Central Wisconsin

Aspirus And Marshfield Clinic Will Co-operate Two Hospitals

By

Two central Wisconsin health care systems are joining forces on hospital projects in Eau Claire and Wisconsin Rapids. The leaders of Marshfield Clinic and Wausau-based Aspirus have signed a letter of intent.

The two competing health care giants intend to build or acquire a hospital in Eau Claire, which they will own together. Marshfield Clinic would also gain a minority interest in Aspirus owned Riverview Hospital in Wisconsin Rapids. Marshfield Clinic Executive Director Dr. Narayana Murali said it is a first for both organizations.

“This is probably the first time that we’ve had a letter of intent at this level,” said Murali. “We are separate entities. We have our own cultures and brands. We are not looking here for a merger. We are essentially collaborating from the standpoint of clinical care to bring the best value for the patient.”

Marshfield Clinic also plans to build a new hospital in Marshfield that will not be co-owned. The so-called “hospital of the future” would open in two years.
