A disagreement between contractors on a bridge project spanning the St. Croix River has led to 120 steel workers walking off the job. But project officials still expect the bridge to open next year.
An unspecified dispute between St. Croix River Crossing contractors J&L Steel and Ames-Lunda Joint Venture caused 120 employees from Iron Workers Local 512 in St. Paul to walk off the site on late last week.
Kristin Calliguri, a spokeswoman for the Minnesota Department of Transportation, said the project is still on schedule and some workers are coming back.

“As of this week there are a few of the iron worker foremen that have been working with Lunda-Ames and coordinating with the week, and so this week they are hiring additional iron workers over the course of this week to keep the project on schedule,” Calliguri said.
The St. Croix River Crossing will connect St. Joseph, Wisconsin in St. Croix County to Oak Park Heights, Minnesota. It’s expected to open to traffic in fall of 2016.
